Walkway Over The Hudson
Saturday, November 21, 2009 at 8:59PM We visited the Hudson Valley's newest attraction this afternoon - the controversial Walkway Over the Hudson. It is billed as the longest pedestrian bridge in the world and after walking it this afternoon, I can vouch for that!
The Poughkeepsie side of the Walkway Over The HudsonThe Walkway is actually an old railroad bridge just to the north of the Franklin Delano Roosevelt Mid-Hudson Bridge. The Mid-Hudson bridge connects the city of Poughkeepsie to the town of Highland.
From the ground, the bridge doesn't look very long but once you get up there you realize that at least 1/3 of the bridge is not visible from Route 9. Despite the length of the bridge we had a good time. Parking is very difficult during peak hours and you should dress warmly because the wind is quite strong once you reach the river.
I noticed that they are in the process of installing LED lighting under the railings and their are specially marked poles for web cams (yet to be installed). Once the lighting is complete, the "park" will be open past sunset. According the bridge authority, the lighting should be completed by the spring of 2010.
